About This Spot

Step inside Chef John's Fish & Chips and you immediately sense it's a spot where familiarity meets the comfort of a classic neighborhood eatery. The worn charm of the interior hints at a place that’s seen countless locals and visitors come through its doors, each drawn by the welcoming simplicity and honest flavors served up fresh. There’s a steady rhythm here—unhurried, purposeful—where meals are crafted to order, inviting you to slow down and savor.

The atmosphere is quietly nostalgic, a reminder of simpler times when quality and care defined a dining experience more than flash or fuss. Though the space carries a humble, lived-in vibe, it's the warmth from the staff and the care in the kitchen that truly colors the mood. You feel invited, not rushed, to enjoy a moment that’s both relaxed and thoughtfully attentive.

On the plate, this translates to generous pieces of fish, their batter crisp and lively, complemented by sides that extend the story of the sea with shrimp, hush puppies, and the occasional surprise like lumpia or fried zucchini. Each bite carries a freshness that speaks to patient preparation rather than quick turnover, and the condiments—from tartar sauce to a squeeze of lemon—are made to elevate, never to overwhelm. It’s clear that here, each element matters.

The steady pace of the kitchen creates a welcoming patience. Recognizing that the best fried fish can’t be rushed, the time taken results in food that arrives hot and thoughtfully ready. This care extends beyond the food to the approachable, no-frills space itself, where people settle in for a meal that feels more like a find than a fast fix.

Chef John's Fish & Chips is not just a place to eat—it’s a quiet corner of Lemon Grove that invites you to experience fish and chips with a sincerity that endures beyond the first visit. Whether you’re coming in as a regular or stopping by for the first time, there’s an understated joy in sharing a meal where freshness, flavor, and genuine hospitality meet.

Delicious! This is definitely a gem spot for that famous fish and chips! This was my very first time eating at this local food spot and i can say it was worth every penny! Food was made fresh to order so taking my first bite of everything was perfectly battered and hot! if you have not been here do yourself a favor and just come by! You will not leave disappointed but you surely will feel nice and full! i will be back for more!

Fish was pretty good. Tasted fresh and was freshly prepared. The tarter sauce was a little sweeter than I prefer but that is a me thing. The fish pieces were big one piece was more then enough. The onion rings are good made with the same or very similar batter to the fish. The restaurant itself is on the older side, felt like it was from a different time. Bathroom floors were a little grimy but I think it may be an age of the building kind of thing. Toilet and sink were clean. Music selection brought back some nostalgia, late 90's early 2000 Christian soft rock, felt like I was back at bible camp. I would eat here again if I was in Lemon Grove but I would not go out of my way for another visit. We split a 2 fish plate and asked for onion rings instead of French fries and both got the smaller drinks it was about 15 per person.

First time here and very impressed with the quality and freshness of the food! My husband and I shared a two piece of fish and chips plate, 6 hush puppies and 6 lumpia. Paid $50, more than I expected to pay, but I understand you’re paying for quality. And it was worth it. Definitely would come back. Very polite and friendly staff. Very clean looking inside. Probably the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. The fish wasn’t greasy, nice and crispy batter. Nothing was greasy at all. Very impressed. Can’t wait to have it again.

The food was fantastic. I got the fish and chips (French fries). Fish was fried perfect. A little crunchy and not greasy. It does take awhile to get your food because they are making it fresh. But, the wait is worth it.

Hidden gem. Food comes out piping hot, their batter is crispy and delicious. I recommend dining-in for the best experience. This is not fast food so it is a 15 min+ wait but so worth it for the made to order freshness. They don't have huge portions and it is on the pricier side but I've never left feeling unsatisfied. I recommend the Fish and Oyster with fries.

Our meals were great. We had individual combos. I had fish and shrimp. My wife had fish and clam strips. The fish was tasty, light and flaky. The portions were very generous as we had plenty left to take home and enjoy later. The shrimp were very good also as were the tatar sauce and cocktail sauce. We both had fries which were very good although we could have substituted zucchini, onion rings, hush puppies or cole slaw. This was our first visit based on our neighbor’s strong recommendation. Chef John’s met and exceeded our expectations. We definitely plan to come back.

The fish is so wonderful light not greasy. Each order is made for you so be prepared to wait for it. But trust me it's totally worth it! This trip I only got the 2pc fish and chips but in the past I've had their a amazing onion rings. Try it you will not regret it.
